Project Overview
New hire onboarding is time sensitive, compliance heavy and almost always completed in fragmented moments: on a phone, between other tasks and without anyone to ask for help.
Built for Equifax, this mobile-first iOS experience turns complex compliance workflows into a clear, guided system that helps new hires finish what is required quickly and confidently.
I co-led the end-to-end UX design, focusing on the mobile-first experience while a co-designer handled the desktop side, partnering with product and engineering throughout.

The Problem
New hires were not struggling with the forms themselves. They were struggling with everything around them:
- Unclear what to do next or how long it would take
- Overwhelming multi-step compliance forms
- High drop-off risk from poor mobile usability
- No sense of progress or completion
- Nothing designed for real iOS behaviour such as interruptions and short sessions
The result was delayed onboarding, incomplete submissions and more administrative work for the employer.
The Opportunity
The opening was to reframe onboarding from a static checklist into a guided, mobile-native workflow: show people exactly what comes next, break compliance into digestible steps, design to iOS patterns people already know, reduce cognitive load through progressive disclosure and support the way the task really happens in short interruptible bursts.
Key Design Decisions
The app was designed for the iPhone rather than scaled down from a desktop build, with thumb-friendly interactions, a clear vertical hierarchy and native patterns that need no explanation.
Onboarding became a trackable journey through visible progress indicators, task completion states and explicit guidance on what is next. Long compliance forms were chunked into focused single-purpose steps with progressive disclosure and inline validation, so nothing arrives all at once.
Real life shaped the rest. Save and resume, short interruptible sessions and minimal typing all assume the user is standing somewhere inconvenient. Dense legal instruction was replaced with plain language, contextual guidance and clear system feedback.
Contactless Identity Verification
In response to constraints of the COVID era, a contactless identity verification flow let users satisfy Form I-9 requirements remotely using facial recognition and ID scanning, removing the in-person step that had been holding up remote hires.
Impact
The mobile-first approach turned onboarding into a structured, genuinely usable experience:
- Reduced friction in completing compliance tasks
- Increased clarity and confidence for new hires
- Less drop-off part way through long form flows
- Faster onboarding completion timelines
- A scalable foundation for future onboarding work
